The theme for 2021 is Access to Essential Services an issue that has become even more pressing as street-connected children and homeless youth around the world struggle to access the services they need to keep them healthy, safe, and provide a brighter future.. The Consortium for street children said ..
Children need to Access essential services – an issue that has become even more pressing as street-connected children and homeless youth around the world struggle to access the services they need to keep them healthy, safe, and provide a brighter future.. The pandemic has intensified the exclusion many street-connected children face when accessing essential services, namely healthcare, education and access to justice.
This is a huge opportunity to highlight the issues that street children and homeless youth around the world are facing. Celebrating IDSC on social media provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the barriers street-connected children face in accessing essential services, especially for those of us who may not be able to hold in-person celebrations and events.
We will be calling on governments around the world to make sure street children have access to essential services. These are the 4 key areas we will be highlighting:
Access essential services:
Street-connected children and homeless youth disproportionately struggle to access essential services, even more so during the pandemic.
Governments must make sure they can access services including education, child protection and healthcare during a pandemic where access is already restricted.
Removing barriers:
Street-connected children and homeless youth will be increasingly vulnerable during the pandemic. Many will be unable to access food, water, healthcare and sanitation due to them not having fixed abodes or registered legal documents.
Governments and donor institutions must remove those requirements to facilitate the access of services that street-connected children are entitled to access.
Prioritising investment: Street-connected children and homeless youth often lack access to basic services, including appropriate information on how to stay safe and what to do or where to go when they need care and support.
Governments must prioritise access to these essential services for street-connected children to help them recover from the pandemic.
Giving street children a voice It is important to ensure street-connected children are listened to, and that their access to services is on the agenda as countries enter recovery and adaptation phases post-lockdown. Communities, parents, religious leaders and teachers must put pressure on their respective governments to ensure the inclusion of street-connected children’s rights to services.
