The issues faced by children in Central America and Mexico remain complex and multi-layered.
However, there is a golden thread that brings all these programmes and initiatives together.
Health.
Children who are survivors of trauma (this can be from abuse and exploitation, experiences living on the streets, having been trafficked) have increased levels of hopelessness, depression and self-harm.
Before a child can begin to believe in themselves and a future where they are valued and respected, they need to feel well in the present. This means ensuring they are physically healthy, have good access to medical care, treatment and regular check-ups.
It also means having access to a range of holistic mental health services: one-to-one therapy to slowly unpack trauma; group therapy sessions to help develop collective strategies and peer support and therapeutic activities to support expression and build confidence such as art, drama and team games.
