International organizations reaffirm their support for the MACCIH and its involvement in the investigation of the Agua Zarca case in Honduras.
London, San Jose, and Washington DC, July 19, 2017. In the light of recently published information on the work of the Mission to Support Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH), and the accusations and threats made Against some of its members, the international organizations that subscribe to this statement reaffirm their support for the MACCIH and its important work to collaborate with national institutions in the fight against corruption in Honduras.
It is extremely worrying that the attacks against the MACCIH that have been reproduced in the Honduran media in recent days are a response to its announcement to collaborate with the Attorney General’s Office in the investigation of alleged acts of corruption around the Agua Zarca case. The most recent direct attacks are part of a pattern of efforts to undermine the credibility of the MACCIH. We call upon all interested parties to respect the mandate of the MACCI to address issues such as the Agua Zarca case, in active collaboration with the Attorney General of Honduras, and to allow the facts of the case to be determined in an independent and impartial tribunal , On the basis of diligent investigation. The MACCIH was created in 2016 with the purpose of collaborating in strengthening the Honduran judicial system in its fight against corruption and impunity through cooperation, technical advice and supervision of local institutions responsible for preventing, investigating and punishing acts of corruption.
As can be seen throughout the region and around the world, corruption has a negative impact on virtually all aspects of a country’s development, including legal certainty, investment, and respect for human rights. It is up to the Honduran government, and all sectors of society, to allow the MACCIH to carry out its work, free of false accusations, interference and attacks.
